Three Ways To Use Mirrors To Create Memorable Wedding Photos

When you're photographing a wedding, it's ideal to always look for unique ways to capture the scene. Doing so is doubly beneficial, as it will keep your clients happy, while also helping you add catchy images to your portfolio. One idea to consider is to use mirrors whenever they're available and doing so is appropriate. Capturing an image's reflection in a mirror can look artsy and give a unique view of the big day. Here are three different ways that you can use mirrors when shooting a wedding.

Wall Mirror

Wall mirrors are present in many buildings, so there's a likelihood that you can find a mirror either in the wedding venue on the reception venue or possibly even at the bride's home as she's getting ready. For the latter, consider not only a shot of the mirror as the bride examines herself but perhaps of a family member — the mother of the bride, for example — looking at the reflection of her daughter in the mirror as a stylist does the bride's hair or makeup. This can be a special image for both the bride and her mother. For mirrors at the wedding locations, a simple shot of the bride waiting to walk into the ceremony venue, captured in the mirror, can be perfect.

Mirrored Sunglasses

For a beach wedding or outdoor wedding, it's common for some people to be wearing sunglasses. If either a member of the wedding party or someone in attendance is wearing sunglasses with a mirrored finish, you can use this accessory to capture a memorable shot. All you need to do is position the person so that a picturesque scene is visible in the reflection in the person's sunglasses. Then, get a close-up shot of the sunglasses, providing just enough of the person's face around them for context. For a beach wedding, setting a pair of mirrored sunglasses in the sand and then shooting the reflection of the wedding can also work well.

Vehicle Mirror

The rearview mirror of a vehicle can also be ideal for shooting at the wedding. If the happy couple is seated in the limo, a shot of their smiling faces in the vehicle's rearview mirror is something to try. When the wedding party is gathered outside one of the vehicles, kneeling down and shooting the reflection of the group in one of the vehicle's side mirrors can also be an option to explore.
